WHATEVER YOU ARE TRUSTING IN
Is it God and Jesus, or something else.
The “something else” is the problem.
It’s never Jesus. It’s ALWAYS the “something else”.
Jesus says we cannot serve both.
In the following verse Jesus sets up the understanding of the conflict between God and “MAMMON”. MAMMON is a sort of generic term for any sort of money and riches and possessions, or anything else that sets itself up against God.
Matt. 6:24 (AMP) – “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon ( deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).”
Jesus defines the issue that faces us today, particularly in the Church of Jesus Christ.
It’s not so much that people don’t really believe in Jesus. In fact many believers think they are serving Him. In a sense they are, but they are also trying to serve the “something else”. When we try to serve two masters we will fail. Eventually we will give in completely to one master while ending up despising and hating the other one. If the “other one” becomes Jesus, than there is a big problem.
This is why trying to balance both won’t work.
Look at the average church goer. And I am sorry to say that it is very common.
The “average” church attendee could not really tell you why they should even attend church. They could not tell you anything that is expected of them by Jesus Christ. They could not string together a logical and sensible account of the story of Jesus from His birth, death, and ultimate Resurrection and Ascension. They could not answer where Jesus is now, or what is the expectation of His Church for the future. Average does not insinuate majority or most. It simply means when a believer has gone to seed basically, and has just become mediocre. “Something else” is competing with Jesus in your life. Church behavior simply reflects that.
BUT…they could tell you minute statistics of their daily workouts, AND their competitors as well. They could tell you batting averages and accumulated yards gained by their favorite athletes not only on their favorite teams but on many other teams. They could quote you the Dow Jones Averages on a daily basis. They know what bands are playing and where. In fact, they know just about everything and anything but what is happening within their own church. That’s because when there is a competing event and it’s on Sunday, church becomes expendable. I’m sure that they don’t even realize that they have subjugated Jesus to a lower place as well, and Mammon has been allowed to sit down in His rightful place.
See how simple it is?
Just telling yourself and even others that Jesus is the Number One in your life really doesn’t make it so.
“Mammon” will run you off your faith. Your job can become Mammon. Your marriage can become Mammon. Your physical obsession with YOURSELF can become Mammon.
It takes guts to sit down and inventory your relationship with Jesus. It’s gutsy because it will require you to set Mammon aside and re-establish Jesus as the true Lord of your life. Not just when it is convenient for you to do that and as long as he doesn’t cramp your self-centered lifestyle.
It is so simple, yet so simple to destroy. I know some really great people who have made poor choices in their lives at the risk of losing Jesus. They don’t think they have, but it is so obvious. They don’t see it because from the inside they think they are doing fine. From the outside one feels tempted to ask, “You are still a believer in Jesus, right?”
I hope you have made the right choice because you cannot have it both ways. Jesus said it, not me. I’m just His messenger. I have taken a few “bullets” along the way for being that, but I wouldn’t change it. Why? Because I serve nothing and no one but Him.
I’m Pastor Doc Lynch from Revival Life Church at 21 Executive Center Drive, New Milford, CT 06776, and we have some great believers here because they take their belief in Jesus seriously. Around here, we love and cherish Jesus Christ!
Church is on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. I hope to get to meet you at some point.
It’s always a CHOICE. If you are a believer already the choice is clear. It’s always Jesus and anything to do with Him over anything else.
If your not a believer than your are living with your choice already. By default you have chosen AGAINST Jesus Christ. THAT is dangerous ground because all you have going for you is…well, just you. YOU doesn’t get it done. Jesus does. He never fails.
Reviving the Church!
